2004 Abel Prize Awarded to M. F. Atiyah and I. M. SingerAuthors: M. F. Atiyah and I. M. Singer
Summary: The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awarded the 2004 Abel Prize to Sir Michael F.Atiyah of the University of Edinburgh and Isadore M.Singer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ``for their discovery and proof of the index theorem, bringing together topology, geometry and analysis, and their outstanding role in building new bridges between mathematics and theoretical physics''. The Abel Prize Ceremony took place in the University of Oslo Aula on May 25, 2004. The Abel Prize was founded on January 1, 2002, on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Niels Henrik Abel and is awarded once per year to acknowledge outstanding accomplishments in the field of mathematics. The mathematical community of Ukraine congratulates Sir Michael F.Atiyah and Isadore M.Singer on having been awarded the Abel Prize 2004 and wishes them many years of creative work and new discoveries. Special congratulations and wishes of endless creative power and good health go to Sir Michael Francis Atiyah, a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a member of the International Editorial Council of our journal, and one of the authors of this issue.
